Als Nederlandstalige zing ik in verhouding weinig in mijn moedertaal, iets wat voor zangers uit Frankrijk, Duitsland, Italië, Engelstalige regio’s of gebieden met een sterke volksliedtraditie heel anders is. Dat bracht me bij vragen als: waarom zou ik me beperken tot de grote Europese talen? Wat betekent het om te zingen in een taal die even ongewoon is voor mij als mijn eigen moedertaal? En hoe verhoud ik me daartoe als witte, westerse zangeres? Kan ik alles zomaar zingen, of vraagt dat om context en aandacht? Waar kunnen al die talen een gedeeld verhaal vinden, en hoe beïnvloeden ze mijn stem? Zit er in een zorgvuldige uitspraak al een vorm van respect en toenadering? Dat zijn vragen waar ik me ook de komende jaren nog veel intensiever mee zal bezighouden.

Alle liederen op dit album behoren tot het gemeengoed: muziek die op de plek van herkomst door iedereen gezongen wordt, en niet gebonden is aan een specifieke rituele of identitaire context. Samen schetsen ze een beeld van iets wat mensen overal ter wereld doen: reizen. Omdat het mag, of omdat het moet. De muziek op het album komt uit alle windstreken, én tegelijk ook uit ons eigen kleine landje.

As a Dutch-speaking singer, I sing relatively little in my mother tongue, something that is quite different for singers from France, Germany, Italy, English-speaking regions, or areas with a strong folk-song tradition. This led me to questions such as: why should I limit myself to the major European languages? What does it mean to sing in a language that is as unfamiliar to me as my own mother tongue? And how do I relate to this as a white, Western singer? Can I simply sing anything, or does that require context and care? Where can all these languages find a shared story, and how do they affect my voice? Is careful pronunciation in itself already a form of respect and rapprochement? These are questions I will continue to engage with much more intensively in the years to come.

All the songs on this album belong to the commons: music that is sung by everyone in its place of origin and is not tied to a specific ritual or identity-based context. Together, they sketch a picture of something people all over the world do: travel. Because they choose to or because they have to. The music on this album comes from all corners of the world, and at the same time from our own small country.
